Translation Strategies For Energy Report From The Perspective Of Chesterman's Translation Norm Theory

International Energy Agency released Energy Access Outlook 2017: From Poverty to Prosperity last year as a special report of the World Energy Outlook series.This paper selects some of the chapters of the report,including the status quo and the prospect of energy access by 2030,mainly related to the access to electricity and to clean cooking,as the research object.This project uses Chesterman's Translation Norms as a theoretical framework,combining theoretical application with case study to explore two issues:(1)how do Chesterman's Translation Norms guide the English-Chinese translation of energy reports?(2)what kind of translation strategies can be employed when dealing with the translation problems encountered in the process so that the final target text can conform to the translation norms?Finally,the author finds that according to the Translation Norm theory,translators need to analyze the types and features of source texts before translating English energy reports,and infer the expectancy of expected readers.During translating,certain translation strategies can be effectively used in an integrated way: such as transposition,unit shift and sentence structure change for syntactic translation problems;abstraction change and distribution change for semantic uses;explicitness change and visibility change for pragmatic solutions,to make the final draft of the translation meet the requirements of three “professional norms”(accountability norms,communicative norms,relation norms).Furthermore,translators of English energy reports are suggested to have basic background knowledge in the energy field,accumulate commonly used technical terms,and combine translation strategies to accurately convey the original information to the target readers.
