Reference And Its Translation In The Energy Policy Review Report

This thesis works out appropriate approaches towards references in English to Chinese translation on the framework of reference devices in cohesion theory in the case of A Report on the G20 Peer Review of Inefficient Fossil-fuel Subsidies That Encourage Wasteful Consumption in China.The text used by this study is an energy policy report.The source language has three prominent features.From the lexical perspective,it is composed of many words related to fossil fuel energy and taxation.With regard to syntax,sentences are generally long and their patterns are varied.Simple and compound sentences appear alternately with the latter taking the main form of attributive and nominal clauses.In terms of discourse,many reference devices are employed to promote the coherence of the text where personal reference and demonstrative reference are dominant.Though the frequency of comparative reference in the source text is less than the last two,examples of this kind are of representative significance.Firstly,this thesis makes a conceptual introduction of reference in discourse and has a review of studies on reference translation.It is followed by the elaboration on personal reference,demonstrative reference and comparative reference in both English and Chinese discourses,and conducts a comparative analysis of them in terms of frequency,number and usage with an attempt to figure out their similarities and differences.Based on the differences of reference devices,translation methods are proposed to three types of reference with concrete examples.Moreover,this thesis analyzes the references in source text and gives a list of referential words extracted from the it.Lastly,combined with particular translation practice,this thesis conducts a detailed analysis of reference relationship in source language and at the same time put forward the translation methods including repetition,omission and replacement under the guidance of reference model in Chinese discourse.This study has three major findings.Firstly,methods of repetition,omission and replacement are adopted to tackle personal reference and demonstrative reference in English to Chinese translating.As comparative reference is largely different than personal and demonstrative reference replacement approach is applied.They are replacement of comparative words and replacement of comparative structures.Cohesion,coherence and fluency can be achieved by these translation methods.Secondly,reference either in source language or target language should accord with the intrinsic law of language system and the external factors in objective environment.In addition,it is influenced by the subjectivity of language users and textual composition.Thirdly,the analysis and understanding of reference cannot be confined to related antecedents,some entity but also context.Therefore,the realization of reference in target language needs translators to utilize learned knowledge as well as logical reasoning,and activate pre-existed patterns.
