Discourse Cohesion-with Reference To The English Translation Of A War At Home

This translation report is based on the medium-length novel A War at Home created by Yang Ger.This novel tells of the mother-daughter relationship which is quite typical and common in China.The author tells the story from the first-person perspective and shapes a live Chinese mother image through depicting how she fight against her husband and daughter,both physically and mentally,while facing a series of family issues like marriage breakdown and her daughter's puppy love,etc.What the author created is not a fiction based on imagination or a story from any textbook but a real life story,and many issues happened in the story also happened and are happening in many modern families,which is very inspiring.The author develops the plot in the story in a cohesive and reasonable way.Meanwhile,it makes the readers feel like in such real events and also provides them with an enlightening model.The language used in the text is concise,fluent and readable,and it contains literary art value as well.Obviously,translating the text is quite a challenge for many translators,for the translator is required to both imitate the language style of the original text and make the language as cohesive as a whole.The author of this paper will select some typical examples from the text and do an analysis on how to make the target language more cohesive through various devices.This report consists of five parts.The first part gives an overall introduction of the writing background,the plot,the author,as well as the original text and parallel texts;the second part describes the process of this translation task,including the preparations for the translation,the after-translation management and the introduction of main theory applied into the translation;the third part does a research on the cohesive theories and devices;the fourth part lists some typical case studies;the fifth part is a general conclusion of this paper.
