Adrian Piper,an African-American artist, critic and philosopher,is considered as an art-philosopher.Piper has been dedicated to art practice in contemporary art.In 2015,she was awarded the Golden Lion for best artist in the international exhibition of the Venice Biennale. At the same time, through studying art theory,Piper finished her PhD.program and became an analytic philosopher. As an artist and scholar made remarkable achievements in both practice and study.Piper, combining her own theory and art practice, standing on the edge to look at the mainstream, focusing on the phenomenon and system of "Inside and outside of art",and going deep into such important concepts and practice as "Anti-Modernism"," Critical Hegemony" and "Indexical Present",and finally succeeded in investigating and introspecting self, others, art and society. The object of this paper is the art writing of Adrian Piper.Starting from the core terms of Piper's art writing, this paper will study Piper's review and reflection on "inside and outside of art and society" of artistic creation, artists, art world and racism. The first part of paper directly presents that Piper's discourse against the mainstream,it mainly contains these chapters like "Anti-Modernism" "Greenberg's Aberration" and so on;The second chapter continues to expound Piper's reviews on mainstream. This chapter reveals the power relationship in art-world and deconstructs Greenberg's formalist art critics and it's hegemonic role on the latter half of the 20 th century; The third chapter uses the metaphorical function of frame to refer to invisible "boundary" in the art world, society and real life, and mainly focuses on Piper' exploration of invisible "boundary"(such as perception, limit and freedom); The forth chapter concentrates on Piper's self-reflection under multiple identities and doubly marginalized African American female artists. In addition, chapter four pays attention to the progress of exploring thegender boundary and seeking identity through body performance, behavior art with ambiguous identity and feminist art practice after the 1970 s.By relating to specific works of art and starting from the constituent elements of art criticism strategy, purpose and discourse mode, the author delves into the internal reasoning of its theory in this paper, then figures the evolution, and finally clarifies the core of Pipet's art writing and art practice, thus restoring the complexity of western contemporary art criticism theory, and providing “the other's” inspiration for the construction of domestic art theory.
