Since the 21 st century,the picture book has become one of the most important reading materials between children and teenagers because of its rich and colorful pictures,vivid stories and profound values.English picture book(EPB),as an effective supplement and extension of English textbooks,is widely used in primary school English teaching.From the existing literature,the study of primary school English picture books focuses on the value selection of EPB,EPB teaching and EPB teaching problems and strategy research.The Compulsory English Curriculum Standards(2017 Edition)states the specific requirements of the secondary goal for students' language ability: students can understand,read and retell simple stories with the help of pictures;write short descriptions based on the hints of pictures,words or illustrative sentences;initially form a perception of English and good learning habits;cultivate interest in learning English,and understand foreign cultures and customs.It seems that picture book teaching greatly conforms to the requirements of New Curriculum Standards.With the implementation of quality education and the advancement of new curriculum reform,picture book teaching has attracted the attention of many scholars.However,in reality,here exists a trivial and labelled tendency in EPB teaching,which undermines the expected effect and validity.Based on Krashen's Input Hypothesis,Piaget's Theory of Children's Cognitive Development,and Gardner's Multiple Intelligence Theory,through questionnaires,classroom observations and interview,this thesis is targeted at 51 teachers from Grade two and Grade three in three different primary schools in order to find the existing problems in EPB teaching.Through investigation,some existing problems have been discussed in this thesis: insufficient understanding of EPB and EPB teaching;lack of definite plan and system;inflexible and single teaching model;insufficient external support;improper evaluation of EPB.Hence,this thesis proposes corresponding improvement measures by combining the existing problems with theoretical and empirical research.It aims to improve the teachers' ability of EPB,try hard to develop students' English comprehensive language application ability,and effectively cultivate students' thinking ability.
