| This report is written on the basis of the English-Chinese translation of the selected chapters of Embodiment and Cognitive Science.Embodiment is an important concept in the field of cognitive science,for which Raymond W.Gibbs,Jr.devotes most of the contents to explaining and discussing embodiment and its relevant researches.In this book,Gibbs also makes some critical comments on different views of cognition.Embodiment and Cognitive Science is the cream of research works in relation to cognitive science.It can be a valuable reference for scholars and researchers in this field.So the source text is a typical academic text.An academic text is usually formal,rigorous,logical and professional.The source text presents the general features of an academic text in its own unique ways.For the lexical feature,there are many terms and proper names which belong to different fields such as psychology,linguistics,philosophy,etc.For the syntactical feature,the source text is composed of intricate sentence components such as inserted phrases,passive sentence voice,adverbials and attributive clauses.For the contextual dimension,each specific context or sense group is rigorously and concisely constructed.These are the features the translator should focus on while translating.In order to fulfill the translation task scientifically,the translator adopts the three rules of Skopos Theory as the theoretical guidance.And by taking into consideration of the features of the source text and the situations of the target readers,the translator has specified each translation aim and has adopted correspondent translating strategy.And also,under the guidance of Skopos Theory,the translator has set up two general objectives for this translation.Firstly,the translation should achieve a certain degree of readability and comprehensibility.Secondly,the translation should convey the messages of the source text in a relatively accurate and comprehensive way.Guided by Skopos Theory,this report discusses the features of academic texts and explores practical translating strategies respectively on the lexical dimension,the syntactical dimension and the contextual dimension.It eventually aims at offering references to other translators who need to translate academic texts,and helping them improve translation quality and efficiency.This report consists of five chapters.Chapter 1 introduces the background of the task,the translation process and the objectives of this report.Chapter 2 analyzes thefeatures of the source text from three dimensions.Chapter 3 gives introduction to the three rules of Skopos Theory and their guidance on the translation.Chapter 4 analyzes the actual applications and effects of different translating techniques in the translation.Chapter 5 is a conclusion of the experience and regrets of this translation task. |
