A Report On The C-E Subtitle Translation Of National Treasure Based On Skopos Theory

Chinese culture is extensive and profound,and cultural relics are the best testimony of culture and history.As a creative and successful program,National Treasure is suitable to be translated into foreign languages for cultural communication and promotion.Unlike traditional forms of translation,on the one hand,the subtitle translation should synchronize with the sounds,actions and images presenting on the screen.On the other hand,this program contains a lot of professional content,cultural information and various logical and contextual factors,which makes the translation process more arduous.This report takes the subtitle of the first episode of National treasure as the translation material,which involves the interviews,stage drama,relic introductions and so on.Under the guidance of Skopos Theory,the author chooses suitable translation methods to solve the difficulties at lexical,syntactical and textual level in the translation process,in order to ensure audiences' comprehension and finally achieve cultural transmission purpose.In this translation practice,lexical problems include the translation of various culture-loaded words,and the author uses transliteration plus annotation,literal translation,free translation and borrowing translation to help audiences understand their cultural connotation;Syntactical problems include the changes of tense,voice,word order,lack of sentence elements and over-length of subtitle translation,and the author uses reordering,amplification and omission to achieve fluent and concise English expressions;Textual problems are mainly logic and style incoherence,and the author uses adaptation,amplification and various rhetoric devices to ensure textual coherence and audiences' comprehension.In the conclusion section,the author also makes some advice for translator promotion and discusses the limitations of this report.It is hoped that this report and translation practice can contribute to the spread of excellent Chinese culture and provide other translators with references for translating similar types of texts.
