In recent years, as the rapid development of cross-cultural communication, a great number of Chinese TV programs have also been exported abroad, foreign audiences wish to understand Chinese culture through TV programs. Subtitle translation brings more innovative form for global cultural exchange, with the content and cultural elements of the TV programs reappearing, which renders the foreign audiences to learn more about Chinese cultures. However, in the course of subtitling translation in cultural exchange, the target language audiences are confined to enjoy and feel the TV programs because of the cultural default.The thesis takes the subtitle translation of National Treasure Files as the corpus of the research, adopts the methods of description and exemplification, elaborates the phenomenon of cultural defaults and explores its compensation strategies in the framework of Relevance Theory. From the perspective of culture, the author classifies the phenomenon of cultural defaults in the corpus. Under the guidance of theory, the author has explored the translation examples in National Treasure Files, and concluded five effective compensation strategies of culture default employed by the translator in the subtitle translation, which could to some extent prove that those strategies might be featured with kind of feasibility. This thesis aims to attract more attention of translators to Chinese-English subtitle translation, and improve the quality of subtitle translation of Chinese TV programs, widely spreading Chinese culture and making contributions to cross-cultural communication.
