Analysis On The Translation Of Film Subtitle With Cultural Factors-From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

Film subtitle translation,as a newly developed branch,has gradually attached attention and research of worldwide scholars in translation field.The author elucidates the special features and technical constraints of film subtitle translation and the previous studies on this field home and abroad.On the basis of predecessors' research, this paper adopts Skopos theory to analyze the translation of film subtitle with cultural factors.Skopos theory views translation as an intentional,interpersonal and intercultural interaction based on a source text.As film is a major way for cross-cultural communication,the translation of its subtitle with cultural factors becomes extremely significant.According to Skopos theory,film subtitle translation is a purposeful activity with a regular assignment to convey the important information to the audience in a specific culture.What the Skopos theory demands for is to make cultural factors in original text effectively convey to target text,so as to finally be accepted by the target audience.Based on the culture distinction proposed by Nida, the cultural factors are divided into five kinds:ecological culture,material culture, social culture,religious culture and linguistic culture.Examples are given to illustrate each category by using the basic rules and concepts of Skopos theory.Under the direction of Skopos theory and with the characteristics and constraints of subtitle, deduction strategies are used in the thesis to deal with the translation of film subtitle with cultural factors.Deduction falls into three categories:condensation,reductive paraphrasing and deletion,and each category is accompanied by detailed examples. Based on Nida's five categories of cultural factors,the thesis make a tentative study about the translation of film subtitle with cultural factors and to a certain extent has practical meaning for the study of film subtitle translation field.
