Abstract/Summary:
This translation report is based on the partial translation of Professor Yu Senlin’s monograph The Translation and Introduction of Chinese Taoist Scriptures in the XIXthh Century English-Speaking World, which consists of five chapters, systematically combing the translation of Chinese Taoist scriptures in the XIXth century English-speaking world. In this translation practice, the author of the report(hereinafter referred to as the AR)translated the preface, the first and last chapters, and the appendix of this book. This translation report records what challenges an MTI student met while translating an academic book dealing with complex notions, such as those in the field of Chinese history, culture, religion and language, and the strategies she adopted in translation. In this report, the AR firstly introduced the translation task, the significance of the translation practice as well as the layout of the report, followed by the second chapter,in which the AR outlined the translation background, including introductions of the source text and its author, and the identification of its target readership. In the third chapter, the case study, the AR analyzed the translation strategies in this translation practice with concrete examples from the perspective of literal translation, liberal translation, and back translation.Chapter four is the summary, including some reflections on this translation practice and the writing of this report, and some suggestions are also offered in this part for future translation studies. The Translation and Introduction of Chinese Taoist Scriptures in the XIXth Century English-Speaking World is the AR’s first assignment of translating an academic monograph, which is of a special importance to her.Through the translation practice and the writing of the translation report, not only her translation and academic writing abilities are exercised, but, more importantly,it offers a good opportunity for the AR to better understand Taoism, the ancient Chinese traditional religion, its scriptures, and the translation and dissemination in the English-speaking world.
