Translation Report On The Chinese-English And Chinese-French Translation Of The Short Story "Painted Bones"

The present thesis is a translation report about the trilingual translation of the short story??/Painted Bones into French and English.The short story was written by Gu Di(??)and belongs to the genre of science fiction with many characteristics specific to Chinese culture,the story takes place in Beijing in a near future and the plot consists in a police investigation on a consciousness abduction case.The report mainly focuses on the trilingual translation process and its peculiar challenges.The first part provides an analysis of the original text,its interesting features,its expected readership as well as the challenges that it will bring in terms of translation.In the second part,the author describes his analysis and application of the methodologies specially designed for trilingual translation and their combination with the technique called retro-translation which consists in comparing relevant parts of the two target texts with the source text and also between them,and then analyzes all the expected results and their implications.The last part is a case study into which the author exposes some of the issues encountered during the translation process and considers them through the scope of the above mentioned techniques while comparing them with the expected results.This report provides an interesting insight of the intrinsic differences between the three involved languages and the appropriate ways of treating these differences in terms of translation.
