A Study Of Nouns In Vim Alakirti Sutra

Vimalakirti Sutra,also known as Incredible Extrication Sutra,which was translated by Zhi Qian,a lay in Three Kindoms Period,is one of Mahayana Buddhism scriptures.This Buddhist text records a strory that Buddha dispatches all of the Buddhists and Bodhisattvas to visit vimalakirti who feigns sickness and stays at home.Based on the half-classical and half-colloquial words features and the writing style of combination of narrative and argumentation,this Buddhist text can reflect the linguisticand social aspect back then.This paper mainly explores effects that the publicity of Buddhism and the translation of sutras have on the system of Chinese vocabulary as well as sense.This paper includes the following sections:The foreword introducts Zhi Qian and his Vimalakirti Sutra,summarize the satus about language research of Vimalakirti Sutra,sketches the value of noun study of Vimalakirti Sutra,clarifies the source of sutras and research methodology,and then points out the purpose of this research and its innovation.Chapter one,we show a clear standard of division about word and phrase,the criteria of noun.And then we count and analyze the nouns with Buddhist color in the Vimalakirti Sutra,which are divided into two categories: Chinese native words of Buddhistization,borrowing words.Next we make a respective syllabification.Finally,we inspect them which were used by Zhi Qian for the first time and which were followed from tanslators of previous generations.Chapter two,we count and analyze the nouns without Buddhist color in the Vimalakirti Sutra,which are classified with concrete noun,abstract noun,noun of time,and noun of orientation.Then we divide the concrete nouns into some about person,about nature,and about society.Next we make a respective syllabification.Chapter three,we tease the diachronical evolution of the single words with Buddhist color,including Fa Men,Shi Jie,Jing Jie,Chen Lao,Su Ming.The conclusion,this paper inspects the influences of Buddhist thought on Chinese native words and borrowing words via the classification of the nouns with Buddhist color;reflects the sense and syllable distribution by the classification of the nouns without Buddhist color;shows the buddhistization and localization evolutions of five Buddhist word by means of teasing the diachronical evolutions of them.
