This report is based on the translation of excerpts of a bestseller,Northland: A 4,000-Mile Journey along America's Forgotten Border by Porter Fox,a travel writer.America's northern border between Maine and Washington once had been America's primary border for centuries.The region has its own name: the northland.However,it remains obscure even to Americans.Through reading this book,the readers can not only appreciate a brilliant piece of travel writing,but also acquaint themselves with the natural scenes,culture,history,society and local residents of northland.In this report,the translator gives a detailed analysis of the process of translating the chosen excerpts of the book Northland,the difficulties encountered during the translation,the corresponding solutions to them and the thoughts during the task.Generally,it can be divided into four parts.The first part is task description,which includes a brief introduction to the source text and to the author,the features of the source text and the significance of translating the source text.The second part is process description,which illustrates the selection of the parallel texts,the use of dictionaries and on-line resources during the translation and the quality control after translation.The third part is case study,in which difficulties in translating the source text and the methods employed to tackle them will be presented and discussed.In the last part,the author will draw some conclusions from the case studies as well as from the whole translation project.Through undertaking this translation project,for one thing,the author expects to improve translation skills and learn more about travel literature.For another thing,the author also hopes that the target readers can enjoy reading the translated version as well as get to know more about northland,the northern border of America.
