A Practice Report On The English Translation Of“Research On Hydrodynamic Speed Regulation System For Variable-Speed Constant-Frequency Wine Turbines”(Excerpt)

In the process of English translation of scientific texts,the application of translation theory makes the finishing point for guiding the practice;meanwhile,the accumulated experience verifies and enriches the relevant theories.The Skopos Theory,from the German functional translation studies,generates corresponding translation strategies for target readers by specific purpose.On the basis of the three principles of “Fidelity,Skopos,and Coherence”,not only the communicative function and features of the scientific text is answered,but also the needs of readers can be met,thus being responsible to both the original author and target readers.To respond to the country's call to develop clean renewable energy(wind energy),and to confirm that the Skopos Theory is feasible for Chinese-English translation of scientific texts in wind turbine field,the author chooses “Research on hydrodynamic speed regulation system for variable-speed-constant-frequency wine turbines” as the source text and the Skopos Theory as the guidance to perform Chinese-English translation.The examples and adopted strategies in the process of practical work are clearly discussed.The case study includes: “Nominalization processing”,“Logic explicitation of clauses” and “Selection of active voice”.The practice has proved that flexible translation strategy makes the translated texts in line with reading habits of target readers guided by the Skopos Theory.The author hopes that the translation practice can provide a valuable reference for the Chinese-English translation of wind turbine field,and also contributes to the international communication of wind turbine technology.
