| After a discussion was proposed in 1967,Grice himself further refined the theory of conversational implicature by proposing the cooperative principle, that is,both parties to a conversation should contribute appropriately to that conversation according to the common goal or general direction of the conversation;if the cooperative principle is infringed, then particularized conversational implicature is generated, which need to be reasoned with the context to derive certain extra-linguistic meanings.Dialogue plays an important role in fictions in shaping characters and promoting the plot.Unlike everyday communication, dialogue in fiction is intentionally arranged by the author,so there are many hidden messages, indicating certain violations of the cooperative principle. When translating contemporary Chinese literary works,if the translator only translates the literal meaning, the content and intent of the original text will be drained in the process of translation.Under the guidance of the theory of conversational implicature, translators can grasp the real content of the original dialogue in a more detailed and precise way,and on this basis, they can better convey the author’s intention to the readers of the target language. As a representative work of the famous contemporary writer Yu Hua,Chronicle of a Blood Merchant(许三观卖血记)has certain popularity overseas and contains a large number of dialogues. The most widely circulated English translation of it by A.F.Jones and the Spanish translation by Anne-Helene Suarez Girald are chosen. This paper first lists the dialogues that violate the cooperative principle in the original text and analyzes the particularized conversational implicatures arising from them in relation to the context. On this basis, three suggestions are provided for the translation of contemporary Chinese literary works in the future:maintaining the character’s coherence, preserving the details and punctuations, and adopting different strategies accordingly. |
