De-verbalization Tactics In Consecutive Interpreting

In a globalized world featuring various cross-culture exchanges,consecutive interpreting plays an increasingly significant role in bridging different groups,cultures and societies engaged in the communication process.Interpreters are required to deliver the speaker’s information to the audience instantly and effectively,which is a great challenge to the interpreter,for he/she has to overcome the obstacles of the literal form and original structure of the source language and successfully express the underlying meaning of the context.Chinese and English,two linguistic systems distinct from each other,have huge differences in every possible way.The Paris School of Interpretive Theory of Translation,represented by Danica Seleskovitch and Marianne Lederer,believes that interpreting is first and foremost an act of communication.Therefore,the object of interpreting should be “sense” instead of the form and structure of language.The threefold model of interpreting consists of three steps,namely,comprehension,de-verbalization and reformation,among which de-verbalization is the core,for it explores possible ways to help the interpreter to get rid of the constraints of the surface structure of the original language,and retain and convey the underlying message to the audience.This report is based on the author’s consecutive interpreting practice for the economic and trade cooperation seminar of the Wenjiang District government and the Berk County government of Greater Reading,Pennsylvania,USA.The Chinese-English interpretation for the leading official of Wenjiang District constitutes the main subject for analyzing the tactics of de-verbalization.This report has been conducted with the aim of specifying the major difficulties the author has faced in the interpreting process and proposing corresponding strategies to tackle these difficulties.Through case analysis,it has been found that the author has encountered four major challenges concerning linguistic structure,idiomatic usages,logical problems and cultural differences.Guided by de-verbalization under the Interpretive Theory,this paper suggests that the adoption of selective omission,interpretive addition,innovative restructuring and logic processing can help the interpreter to overcome the inter-lingual transfer barriers and achieve better communication.The report hopes to provide empirical materials and a theoretical point of reference for interpreting seminars concerning economic collaboration between regions and cities.
