This article centers on the challenges in translating words and phrases in expository texts, and offers strategies by analyzing examples selected from The Future and Its Enemies.Based on factual information, this non-fictional book pictures the current situation of the American society and points the direction it is heading. It is expository prose.Words used in this style of writing tend to be formal and many are abstract nouns.Culture-loaded words in this piece of writing related to the American society pose another challenge for translators. In addition, the text involves a number of famous figures and their view-points.It is critical to show their stand in the translation by use of proper Chinese words.Three techniques are developed to deal with these challenges—extension, substitution, and explanation.Examples are listed to show how these techniques contribute to an accurate and fluent piece of translation.
