This report is based on A Grand Exposition of Chinese Calligraphy which was published by Peking University.A Grand Exposition of Chinese Calligraphy introduces Chinese Calligraphy which is an important part of Chinese culture.There is no English version of this book.The author selects Chapter Three as the translation material.Foreigners can appreciate Chinese calligraphy and have a further understanding on Chinese culture.The author takes communicative translation theory proposed by Peter Newmark as theory guidance.Under the guidance of the theory,the author analyzes the difficulties and problems in the process of translation and puts forward corresponding solutions.Meanwhile,translation strategies used by the author in the translation process are recorded.The author summarizes the gain and loss in the process of translation and discusses the translation skills that a translator should grasp.The report is divided into four parts.In the first part,the author briefly introduces the translation task,including the source and significance of the task.In the second part,the author describes the translation process.At the beginning,the translator makes a brief introduction to the preparation works,including translation tools,the defining of text type as well as the translation theory.Based on the first draft,the author accomplishes a satisfying translation by carefully polishing the translation.In the third part,under the guidance of the communicative translation theory,the author analyzes the crucial part with many specific cases in great detail.At the end of this report,the author has a profound thinking for the unsettled issues,looking forward to being helpful for further work.
