The translation material is selected from A Grand Exposition of Chinese Calligraphy.Jin Kaicheng,a famous calligraphy scholar, collaborates on this book with Wang Yuechuan who is the initiator of “calligraphy culture”.The book describes the calligraphic development from the Shang Dynasty,Zhou Dynasty and Qin Dynasty to the modern times.Considering the informative text, the author uses the theory of communicative translation put forward by Peter Newmark to guide this translation on the basis that different translation strategies deal with different texts.During the translation process, the author has difficulty in idiomatic English expressions of some words and sentences. The challenge in words is how to translate them accurately;the problem in sentence translation is how to make the target text as vivid and effective as the original text.In preliminary translation, the author deals with the expressions of words and sentences through elaboration of original text and adoption of the way of expression which is closer to the way of thinking of target language readers.During the second stage of translation, the author finds some errors in selected material with the help of the supervisor.Under the guidance of the communicative translation, the author adds footnotes to correct misstatements and analyzes them.In the process of the case study, the author analyzes words and sentences by means of amplification, omission, free translation to reproduce the effect of the selected text under the direction of the communicative translation.Although some questions appeared during the translation process, they were resolved carefully and the project was completed before the deadline. The author explored translation methods of calligraphy culture and summed up experience in the process of translation.Meanwhile, the author expects that this report could help other translators to do the calligraphy translation for the future.
