Chinese leaders often quote ancient poetry at international conferences, which demonstrates not only cultural implications, but also profound and extensive Chinese culture. However, due to the differences between Chinese and English cultures, the translation of ancient poetry in conference interpreting is a major difficulty.Based on Cultural Schema Theory, the author tries to make collections of the ancient poetry and prose in the speeches made by the prime minister in the press conferences from 2003 and 2018.This thesis tries to analyze the differences of cultural schemas between Chinese and English,in order to help the interpretation of Chinese poetry and prose. After analyzing the C-E interpretation of ancient poetry in the press conferences based on Cultural Schema Theory,we find the following conclusions: 1)If there is some correspondence between Chinese and English cultural schema, there must exist something common between Chinese and English. In this case, literal translation can be used. The culture of the original language is preserved without affecting the transmission of information. In some cases,structure-borrowing translation can be used.Due to the limitations of on-site interpretation,English idioms can be used to interpret the ancient poetry.2)If there are some conflicts between Chinese and English cultural schema,we have to explain the poetic images that may cause misunderstanding or use literal translation plus annotation method to supplement the description.3)If the English audiences can hardly understand Chinese poetry, the method of transliteration does not work.Free translation is generally adopted. If the whole sentence is very hard to understand and the translatability is relatively low, interpreters can boldly adopt the method of omission without affecting the audience's overall understanding of the speaker's intention.
