A Study On English Critical Reading Teaching Strategies In Senior High School

In response to new challenges of the information and knowledge age,interdisciplinary competency is advocated by the whole world.Critical thinking is one of the most significant competencies.As one of the important ways to cultivate critical thinking,critical reading is gained increasing attention from numerous researchers.The significance of critical thinking and critical reading has also gradually penetrated into high school English teaching.Accordingly,based on Constructive Learning Theory and Critical Discourse Analysis,this study focuses on the critical reading teaching in senior high school,aiming to present the current situation of critical reading strategies and existing possible problems objectively and comprehensively.And based on problems,possible critical reading strategies are proposed.This study aims to solve the following three research questions:(1)To what extent are critical reading strategies being applied in senior high English class?(2)What are exiting possible problems students have in observing classroom?(3)What are the effective strategies to be given to senior high English teachers?This research was carried out on Yudu No.2 Middle School in Jiangxi,taking152 students as research subjects.A multi-method approach was adopted by this study,which was involving questionnaire,classroom observations and two testes.Before teaching experiment,students were investigated the view of critical reading strategies by questionnaire.And 15 reading classes were observed in the process of experiment.Two tests were given to students before experiment and after experiment.Findings from questionnaire revealed that average level was not pretty well,which was not up to standard,especially evaluating strategy.Findings from classroom observations was indicated three existing problems,which were including focusing on vocabulary and grammar teaching too much,monotonous reading mode,and more testing-oriented practice and less oral work or writing.Therefore,based on Duel Dimensional Frame Model from The Delphi Project and Critical Thinking Skills Model from Wen,five critical reading strategies are proposed which are predicting,analyzing and making inference,questioning,summarizing and evaluating.By making a comparison pre-test with post-test of experimental class,grades have a great significance.The results of study contribute to finding possible problems and then proposed possible solutions and testing its significance.Practical suggestions for pedagogy and future research have a significant meaning.
