In modern society,how to select information has become one of the important capabilities.Critical thinking focuses on comprehensive reading to put forward its own unique views.It coincides with the requirements of the New Curriculum Standard.In senior high school,there is a space for critical reading teaching.Therefore,teachers should adjust the existing reading teaching,integrate critical reading strategies into it,and encourage students to read deeply and improve their reading ability.This study based on constructivist learning theory,schema theory and critical discourse analysis theory.It combines the understanding of critical thinking and critical reading strategies.It aims to explore: firstly,can critical English reading teaching cultivate students' critical thinking? Secondly,can critical English reading teaching improve students' English reading achievement? Thirdly,how to cultivate students' critical thinking ability in English reading teaching?In this study,the students of two classes in Senior 1 in Liaoning Province were selected as the participants.The teaching experiment lasted for 12-weeks.Before the experiment,the researcher used the California Critical Thinking Skills Test and the critical reading tests for both classes;In the experiment,the researcher applied critical reading teaching strategies in the experimental class;After the experiment,the two classes were tested for critical thinking ability and reading performance again.Finally,the author analyzed the data collected from the experiment.The experimental results showed that :(1)Critical reading teaching is an effective way to cultivate students' critical thinking ability in senior high school;(2)The cultivation of critical thinking ability can promote students' English performance.This study is to provide theoretical and practical basis for English teachers about how to carry out critical reading teaching in the future,and also to provide some references for relevant English teaching research.Though there are some shortcomings in the research,which need to be improved in the future.
