Quality Assurance In Legal Translation In Law Firms

International trade and business has a long history with its first appearance in China in Western Han dynasty.The world has developed greatly and recent years have witnessed the growth of international trade and business.Now in China,there are a lot of foreign-invested companies and joint venture companies,and there are also numerous Chinese companies establishing abroad with the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative.With the expansion of economic globalization,there would only be more multinational companies.And with their development,there will be a large number of legal documents and actions.Today in China,Chinese law firms that handle international issues and foreign law firms spring up.In this background,the author assumes that legal translation is of great importance in every sense.In the summer vacation,the author has interned in an International law firm,where she got access to many standard English legal documents and done a lot of translation and proofreading work.In the Law Firm,three requirements prevail for legal translation,namely consistency,accuracy,and professionalism,which are also dominant requirements for legal translation in the academic circle.However,when actually implementing those translation Projects,the author found that those requirements are too general to abide by,which makes the translation and follow-up proofreading work arbitrary and subjective.The author,therefore,studies and summarizes the translating and proofreading documents she has done in the Law Firm and reads some papers from both home and abroad and summarizes a set of more specific benchmarks.This report is about the author's efforts of studying and analyzing the translating and proofreading works she has done,studying relevant academic papers from both home and abroad,and summarizing relevant benchmarks.In this report,the author starts from the language and concept demands in the Law Firm,which is the achievement of the consistency,accuracy,and professionalism of the content.Then she moves on to present the system and process adopted in the Law Firm to met the requirements and demand.After the translation work,the author finds out that the assurance of the quality can be realized by the achievement of both language and concept consistency,the identification of the connotation and reference behind the language symbol and the confirmation of their equivalents in the Target Language,and the guarantee of professional form of the Target Text.At the end of this report,the author makes a summary on the details of the quality assurance process in the Law Firm and suggests some improvements.The author hopes that this report may serve the purpose of knocking on the door to a set of more specific benchmarks in legal translation and be helpful to future researches.
