The C-E Translation Of Long Sentences In Legal Documents

This report is based on the C-E translation of a series of legal documents-----Articles of Association. On one hand, the legal documents are highly specialized which involve professional knowledge. On the other hand, the legal language is a language for special purposes which is precise,formal and standard. These features can be found both in Chinese and English legal texts. However, Chinese and English belong to different language systems. We need to deal with all the differences when we translate the legal texts from Chinese to English. In this report, the author mainly takes the English translation of long sentences in the Chinese legal texts as the object of study and discusses some translation techniques for Chinese long sentences under the guidance of a series of the principles of legal translation.The discussion mainly can be divided into two parts:the connections within sentences features and syntactic features. On the connections within sentence level, the author discusses the translation of the Chinese long sentences that without the conjunctions. The conjunctions are often added when translate such sentences from Chinese to English. In this part, the translation of the Chinese sentences with several verbs is also discussed. The author adopts many skills such as the conversion of parts of speech,the application of nonfinite verbs and the omission of some verbs to deal with the redundant verbs in Chinese sentences. On the syntactic level, the translation of a unique pattern sentence in Chinese language that without a subject is discussed. In English, a sentence must have a clear subject except for the imperative sentence. As a result, the translator often needs to fill out the subject or make the conversion of sentence structures in the C--E translation.In addition, Chinese mainly relies on Parataxis and English greatly on hypotaxis.During the C-E translation,the translator needs to adopt translation skills such as following the original syntactic order and adjusting the original syntactic order therefore the paratactic Chinese sentence can be changed into the hypotactic English one. All of these translation skills are adopted to make the translation accept by the readers of English.
