A Report On The Translation Of Jade City (Excerpts)

This is a report on the translation of the first four chapters of Jade City.Jade City is a fantasy novel in which jade is at the core and it can be used to wield magic powers in an Asia-style fantasy metropolis written by Fonda Lee,who is a Canadian-American author of fantasy literature.The book is published by Orbit US and nominated for Nebula-award Best Novel in 2017.This report mainly concentrates on the problems that are encountered during the translation process of the first four chapters of the book and solutions to the problems.This translation report consists of four parts which are task description,process description,case study and conclusion.The author,the book,and reasons for selecting the source text are expounded on in the first part so as to present the brief introduction of the book and the task.And then the following part details the translation tools and parallel text prepared for the translation as well as the approaches adopted to guarantee the quality of the translation while focus of this part is mainly placed on the major problems the translator is confronted with and the reasons why the problems are arisen.In the third part,targeting at the major problems discussed in the second part and thinking that other translators of fantasy literature might face the similar problems,the translator presents some examples for the translation analysis for reference,and no translation theories are exclusively chosen to guide the translation practice since he believes that translation is a process in which different translation methods and strategies,such as literal translation,free translation,transliteration and others,are flexibly adopted to cope with the problems encountered.In the last part,the translator draws a conclusion of the translation report.Through this translation report,the translator has learned that during the translation process,translation practice and theories are not separate and they are complementary to each other which is similar to painting and music in which there are theories related to the practices.And a translator needs to understand that concrete translation strategies and methods should be applied according to different specific situations.
