Folk beliefs have gradually revived throughout China since the reform and opening up.Discussing the relationship between folk beliefs and modernization will help us further grasp the role of folk beliefs and understand the process of modernization in contemporary China.In the wave of modernization,many temples have been demolished due to the transformation of urbanization.The south district of Quanzhou is the center of ancient city life and the source of commercial trade.The folk beliefs there are also experiencing the impact of urban construction,the transformation of traditional historical blocks and the community construction.It is doubtful that there are many temples in the area of 0.5 square kilometers in the south of Quanzhou.In the context of urbanization,the folk beliefs there are recognized by the official government and community builders,and are regarded as a kind of cultural resources and social capital to be utilized.Thus,the folk beliefs there can be restored and developed,and play an important role as "frequent visitor" on the stage of community building,city marketing and cross-strait exchange.Why does the "urban-rural fringe" of the old Quanzhou City survive in the modernization construction? How does it achieve its own development? What is the relationship between modernization and folk belief there?This study regards folk beliefs as a kind of cultural resources and social capital,puts them in the context of modernization,combs the history of the development of folk beliefs and investigates the field,and analyses the characteristics and transformation factors of folk beliefs in the south district of Quanzhou.By summarizing the research theories of western scholars,comparing cases,further thinking about the relationship between them,and discussing how folk beliefs serve the demands of modernization construction.
