Studies On Translator’s Subjectivity Displayed In Li Meihua’s Chinese Version Of Gone With The Wind From The Perspective Of Feminist Translation Theory

Abstract/Summary:
Gone with the Wind,an American famous novel,creates a new female image,being strong,optimist and continuously self-renewal,through depicting Scarlett who has changed her fate and the entire family in a series of frustrations by her persistence and hard work.Since its publication in 1936,Gone with the Wind has attracted widespread attention from readers and became one of the best-selling novels in the United States.It won the Pulitzer Prize in 1937 and has been translated into 29 languages in the world,with 30 million copies sold.So it is of great value to study the novel.Feminist translation studies emphasize to promote the social status of women and the translated text,changing the injustice of women in traditional gender concept,and breaking the binary opposition structure of “author-translator” and “the original text-the translated text” in traditional translation concept.It facilitates the independence of women and the promotion of women’s social status,and is conducive to the spread of feminism.Among many Chinese versions of Gone with the Wind,Li Meihua’s Chinese version shows the feminist ideas and feminist translation strategies.Therefore,the author chooses to study the translator’s subjectivity displayed in Li Meihua’s Chinese version of Gone with the Wind with the guidance of feminist translation theory.After the detailed studies,the author has found that Li Meihua has conveyed her feminist intentions as a female translator through proper feminist translation strategies when translating Gone with the Wind,which has reached the purposes of resisting the traditional gender discrimination,further improving the status of the translated text and highlighting the translator’s identity.Therefore,the paper argues that Li Meihua has displayed her translator’s subjectivity in translation process by adopting the feminist translation strategies of “supplementing”,“hijacking” and “prefacing and footnoting”,which has resisted the injustice against women in the traditional gender concept,broken the binary opposition structure in traditional translation,feminized her Chinese version,and improved the status of women and the translated texts.First of all,Li Meihua has mainly adopted the strategy of supplementing when translating Gone with the Wind.More specifically,she has mainly supplemented the descriptions of women’s appearance,women’s psychology,women’s physiological period and the derogation of men.The supplementing can raise the social status of women in literary works,shape a good female image and derogate the social status of men,conveying Li Meihua’s feminist ideas,and displaying her translator’s subjectivity fully.Secondly,Li Meihua has also adopted the strategy of hijacking in her translation process,which mainly involves the adapted translation of the descriptions of damaging women’s image and the descriptions of derogating female self-esteem.The hijacking can beautify women’s image,maintain women’s dignity,break the binary opposition structure in traditional translation,and shake the prejudice against women and the translated text in traditional concept,which is conducive to the spread of feminist ideas and displays her translator’s subjectivity.Finally,Li Meihua has adopted the strategies of prefacing and footnoting when translating Gone with the Wind.She has added a preface at the beginning of her Chinese version,analyzing the contradictory character of Scarlett and discussing Scarlett’s motto “Tomorrow is another day”.Meanwhile,she has also added footnotes in her translation to explain her translation intention.The prefacing and footnoting have shown Li Meihua’s translator identity and her feminist ideas,feminizing her Chinese version and displaying her translator’s subjectivity.Through the study of the examples of feminist translation strategies in Li Meihua’s Chinese version,this paper studies the exertion of Li Meihua’s translator’s subjectivity.The author hopes to make some contributions to the study and improvement of the translator’s subjectivity research from the perspective of feminist translation theory,and to provide some reference for the Chinese translation study of classic foreign works.This paper can further improve the study of feminist translation,provide a reference for the future study of feminist translation strategies and broaden the perspective of feminist translation theory to a certain extent.At the same time,this paper can further enrich the translation research of Chinese versions of Gone with the Wind,providing a new perspective for Chinese and foreign literary translation practice.
