Vocabulary plays an important role in English learning.It is the basis for improving learners' comprehensive English application ability.To this end,the national compulsory education curriculum standard also emphasizes the importance of vocabulary acquisition.However,the current primary school English vocabulary teaching mostly uses simple mechanical repetition,in which students read and remember words without thinking,which is very inefficient and even boring for primary school students to learn vocabularies.Phonics teaching method applies the principles of the association between letters or letter combinations and pronunciation to help students memorize words,which improves students' English learning abilities,as soon as they see words,they can spell them out,and as soon as they hear words,they can write them down.Many studies at home and abroad have shown that phonics teaching method is effective in improving students' vocabulary memory.The author applied phonics teaching method into teaching English vocabulary for the fifth grade students in a primary school to explore the extent to which phonics could really improve the accuracy of pupils' reading and spelling and the pupils' English achievement,and whether it can effectively stimulate pupils' interest in learning English vocabulary.After the careful study,the major findings of the study are summarized as follows:Firstly,phonics teaching method can improve the accuracy of pupils' English reading and spelling.Phonics teaching changed the students' understanding of the formation of English words and the relationship between letters and sounds in the experimental class.Students can recall the corresponding letters or letter combinations by pronunciation.They can also decode English words according to the rules of letters and pronunciations,which greatly improved the accuracy of English reading and spelling.Secondly,phonics teaching method can improve pupils' English achievement.The phonics teaching method of letter-sound correspondence can help students input and output English new words more easily and correctly.The improvement of the accuracy of pupils'reading and spelling is bound to affect English performance and help students improve their English learning achievement.Finally,phonics teaching method stimulated students' interest in learning English vocabulary.Phonics teaching method could satisfy students' psychological needs and promote their intrinsic motivation.The findings of this study provided useful enlightenment for primary school English teaching.Phonics teaching method could improve the accuracy of English word spelling and reading,so it is a feasible method for primary English teaching.
