| In recent years,the biographies of famous foreign athletes have been continuously introduced into China,while those of Chinese athletes have rarely been translated into English.China has paid more attention to the development of sports industry with the deepening of opening up and the rapid development of the economy,and there are many outstanding athletes in various fields.It is also necessary to introduce outstanding Chinese athletes to English readers.Yao Ming,the former Chinese basketball player,is one of China’s most internationally influential athletes,therefore the translator has a good reason to choose a biography of him for translation and research.The source text of the translation project is the third chapter and part of the seventh chapter from Ping Shi Yao Ming,written by a renowned Chinese sports journalist Wang Meng.The book is a record of Yao Ming,including his career and daily life from 2002 to 2010.It is a biography of a sports figure,in which there are many descriptions of basketball games.Hence the book has distinct features of biography and sports text,and these features should be presented in the translation.The report presents the translation process of the source text under the guidance of skopos theory.First of all,the translator introduces the background information and significance of the report as well as the translation process,analyzes the translation difficulties on the lexical,syntactic and stylistic levels,explains skopos theory and its three rules,and analyzes the translation means under the guidance of skopos theory.The idiomatic phrases are translated by means of literal translation,substitution and free translation.Vague expressions are translated by the technique of amplification.Literal translation is applied to the translation of classical Chinese poetry and similes.Direct quotations are literally translated with colloquial expressions.The translator hopes that the translation will help readers know Yao Ming and the situation of Chinese basketball.At the same time,the translator hopes that this report will be a reference to the translation of biography and sports text. |
