Zhongyong is a monograph of moral philosophy on the realm of life cultivation in ancient China. It is not only the inheritance and development of Confucius'thought but also the beginning of the development of Confucian philosophy. It has a wide influence on the moral construction and cultural education in ancient China, and also has certain guiding significance to the cultural circles at home and abroad. With the development of globalization and the increasingly close cultural exchange between countries, the study of Chinese traditional culture has also set off an upsurge. The translation study of Zhongyong has attracted extensive attention of scholars at home and abroad.Ku Hongming was the first translator to translate and publish Chinese classics at the beginning of the 20~thh century. He broke the monopoly of foreign missionaries and sinologists on the English translation of Chinese classics. His classics are widely circulated in the West.At present, scholars have studied Ku Hongming's translation of Zhongyong from different perspectives, such as the reception theory, the functional equivalence theory and the postcolonial theory, few translations are carried out from the perspective of eco-translatology.The eco-translatology is a new theory full of“young vitality”put forward by Hu Gengshen,a Chinese scholar,in the process of adapting to the trend of global ecological thinking. He not only studies translation from the perspective of ecology but also combines ecology with translation studies, and he even puts forward the concepts of translator-centered,translation eco-environment,three-dimensional transformations and translation adaptation and selection. Moreover,he adopts them to translation studies, which provides a new perspective for the study of the translation of Chines classic books,Zhongyong in particular.Based on the theory of eco-translatology and the adaptation and selection of“three-dimensional transformation”,this paper studies the translation strategies adopted by Ku Hongming in the translation of Zhongyong, and draws the following conclusions:First,Ku Hongming's translation of Zhongyong pays much attention to the grasp of the whole and stresses to propagate the meaning of the original text from the macro cultural point of view in order to achieve the purpose of“cultural output”.Second,Ku Hongming lays emphasis on the translator's subjectivity in the process of translation of Zhongyong. In order to adapt to the ecological environment of translation at that time,Ku Hongming made an adaptive choice of translation strategies and methods. It reflects the guiding role of ecological translation in the translation of classic books into English.Third,Ku Hongmin's adaptive translation strategies for the keywords, grammar, syntax and discourse translation of Zhongyong correspond to the adaptive choice of the cultural dimension of eco-translatology so as to achieve the purpose of the blending of language, culture and communication. This paper analyzes the translation strategies of Ku Hongming in the translation of Zhongyong from the perspective of eco-translatology,which not only broadens the scope of application of translation theory but also embodies the versatility of the theory.Furthermore,it reflects the role of the translator's subjective initiative in the process of translation, which not merely helps people to have a better understanding of the charm of Chinese classical culture but helps foreign readers realize the connotation and value of Chinese culture deeply with a view to promoting Chinese traditional culture to the world.
