Collections of Essays on Chinese Historical Geography (4th volume) translation report is about a Chinese-English text. It is authored by Shi Nianhai and the book concerns about historical military geography, which is an important branch of historical geography. It possesses the characteristics of both natural science and social science. Although the book is well known in Chinese academic field, it is unknown to foreign academic circles. To introduce it to historical-military-geography lovers and researchers in English-speaking countries, we need to translate it well and idiomatically. It is also beneficial for spreading our excellent and long historical military geography culture. The translating project of Collections of Essays on Chinese Historical Geography (4th volume) is organized by Zhang Xiaojun. I am in charge of two parts:preface and historical military geography in Guanzhong, about20,000words in total. Both parts are very important in the whole book:the former is the beginning of the book, and it is the guideline of the whole text, which paves the way for the later parts and points out the social meaning and academic value and major motivation; the latter part is the core of the book for the book is mainly concerned about historical military geography in Shaanxi and some relevant historical events where Guanzhong plays a very important part. This translation report is divided into four parts:the first part is about the general description of the translation task that I am in charge of, including its source, nature, characteristics, and targeted language readers; the second part is about the analysis and statement of translating strategy-alienation in the task, and some translation methods and skills are also mentioned with a few detailed corresponding examples; the third part is about the problems that I encounter in the process of translation including comprehension, names of people and places, notes on the map, reign title, technical terms, and literature, and the statement of the difficulties and the corresponding solutions; the last part is about the conclusion that gives a summary of the translation preparations, translation problems, and translators’qualities, which is in the hope of being helpful to later similar translated texts.
