A Practice Report On English-Chinese Translation Of Instruction For Turbo Generator Installation

With the rapid development of international trade,a large amount of advanced equipment has been introduced to China.As an important written carrier of equipment installation,installation instruction plays an essential role in ensuring the accuracy and safety of the equipment installation,thus,there is an increasing number of demands for translation of equipment installation instruction in China.According to translation studies on instruction at home and abroad,the author finds that the current study of instruction translation focuses on product instruction instead of installation instruction.This report describes the translation project completed by the author at Linguist Translation Services.It takes E-C Translation of Instruction for Turbo Generator Installation as a case to analyze the problems encountered in the translation as well as corresponding solutions and translation techniques.The report places emphasis on the importance of every process of the translation in retrospection.It also puts forward relevant translation techniques according to the case analysis under the guidance of Skopos theory.Consequently,it produces a superior translation text and guarantees that the equipment installers can install the equipment properly under the guidance of the highly quality installation instruction.The practice result shows that both pre-translation preparation and proofreading play important roles in the translation process.Pre-translation preparation is the key to ensuring a smooth translation process;proofreading is the guarantee of the translation quality;therefore,translators should take the whole translation process seriously.What's more,installation instruction is operative,the translation of which serves as information carrier in social interaction,therefore,the installation instruction is practical and purposive.Translators should adhere to the translation principles and be target reader-oriented under the guidance of Skopos theory to translate the source text based on target readers' reading patterns and educational background.The author hopes this report can offer supplement to researches on instruction translation.
