A Report On English-Chinese Translation Of Favipiravir Investigator's Brochure(Excerpt)

With the growing popularity of “The Belt and Road Initiative”,interpretations and translations gain a further development in all professions and trades.Medical translation,as an important branch of English for Science and Technology(EST)translation,has been playing an important role in the communication between Chinese and Western cultures.The English-Chinese translation of medical texts can not only remove language barriers,facilitate the admission of the foreign medicine into the Chinese market and meet the demands of Chinese patients,but also provide reference information for the drug investigators.Peter Newmark,a British translator,classifies texts into the expressive text,the informative text and the vocative text in terms of linguistic functions.Different text types adopt different translation methods.Therefore,based on the above three text types,Newmark comes up with two translation theories: Semantic Translation and Communicative Translation.Communicative Translation focuses on the information conveyed by the source text and the target reader's responses,which is suitable for the translation of informative and vocative texts.According to Newmark`s text typology theory,the textbook is a typical informative text,so Communicative Translation is adopted to guide the translation practice and the writing of the thesis.This report,guided by the Communicative Translation,is mainly composed of four parts: project description,translation process,translation difficulties and solutions,evaluation and suggestion,including three major difficulties — medical terms,passive voice sentences as well as long sentences and complex sentences in E-C translation of Favipiravir Investigator`s Brochure.Through case study,the author makes a summary of corresponding translation strategies and techniques for medical terms,passive voice sentences as well as long sentences and complex sentences of Favipiravir Investigator`s Brochure as follows: firstly,as for medical terms,word-for-word translation,free translation and transliteration can be applied to ensure the standardization and accuracy of professional terms expression;secondly,as for passive voice sentences,converting the English passive into the Chinese active,and conserving the passive voice in Chinese can be applied to achieve fluency and fidelity;thirdly,as for long sentences and complex sentences,in-sequencing translation anddivision can be applied to achieve coherence and faithfulness.Through the translation practice under the guidance of Communicative Translation,the author summarizes the above translation strategies and techniques,hoping it will be helpful for the translators in medical Investigator`s Brochure.
