The Factors Underlying Chinese Senior High School Students' English Classroom Enjoyment

For a long time,emotional studies have focused on anxiety in the field of second language acquisition.In recent years,with the development of positive psychology,there are more and more studies on positive emotions.Positive emotions could expand students' consciousness domain in foreign language classroom,improve the application of learning strategies,and help students relieve the negative effects on negative emotions.Therefore,it is great significant to rearch the positive emotions related to foreign language learning.Among the many positive emotions,enjoyment is especially concerned by researchers.In recent years,researchers at home and abroad have made so many deliberate explorations on enjoyment in foreign language learning by means of investigation and experimental research,which has made us have a deeper understanding of the conceptual independence of pleasure emotion in foreign language learning,the impact of pleasure emotion in foreign language learning on foreign language learning and the causes of pleasure emotion in foreign language learning.Nevertheless,there are still many shortcomings in the research direction of pleasure mood in foreign language learning.These shortcomings are not only reflected in the limitations of the research object,but also in the relatively narrow research issues.On the basis of previous studies,this study further explores the internal and external factors affecting the pleasure of foreign language learning among senior high school students in urban and rural China,with a view to enriching the research literature in this field and further enhancing people's understanding of the pleasure of foreign language learning.The main idea of this study is to analyze the potential variables affecting senior high school students' English classroom pleasure from a qualitative point of view through interviews,and then to investigate whether these potential variables can significantly affect senior high school students' English classroom pleasure through quantitative methods.The subjects were 231 senior one to senior three students from two schools in Hainan Province.Sixteen high school students participated in the pre-interview and 215 students participated in the follow-up questionnaire survey.The interview results show that perseverance,self-confidence,learning motivation,learning strategies and classroom environment are theinfluencing factors of high school students' English classroom pleasure.Among them,self-confidence,learning motivation,learning strategies and classroom environment proved to have a significant impact on senior high school students' English classroom pleasure in the follow-up questionnaire data analysis.In addition,this study also finds that learners' internal motivation has a greater impact on senior high school students' English classroom pleasure than external motivation;among metacognitive strategies,cognitive strategies and resource strategies,the former two can significantly predict senior high school students' English classroom pleasure level;among the dimensions of classroom environment such as teacher support,peer support,classroom organization and task management,only task organization is significant.Affects the high school student's English classroom pleasure mood.Therefore,the influencing factors of pleasure in foreign language classroom are relatively complex,including learners' internal factors and external factors related to teacher/teacher classroom organization.Based on the results of the study,this study gives suggestions on how to improve the pleasure of Chinese high school students,including helping students learn to learn,innovating classroom organization,improving teachers' classroom organizational ability and adopting "humanistic" teaching methods.At the end of the paper,the innovation and shortcomings of this study are discussed,and the direction of future research is pointed out.
