Analysis And Translation Strategies Of Financial Text—Doing Business 2019:Training For Reform(Excerpt) Translation Report

This translation practice is selected from Doing Business 2019: Training for Reform,including new case study on starting a business and getting electricity,which is published by the World Bank to the public.The 16 th flagship report is designed to measure whether business regulations can help promote or limit business activities.Doing Business presents quantitative indicators on business regulations and the protection of property rights that can be compared across 190 economies—from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe—and over time.Through the analysis of the practice object,it is concluded that the financial material text has multiple financial vocabularies,chart data,long sentences,plain and objective features,and establishes its own translation term base for the characteristics of financial texts.When I translate this kind of text,the report makes a summary of the methods.It is divided into five parts: the first chapter introduces the background and the purpose of the project;the second chapter summarizes the translation tasks,including the pre-translation,translation process,text proofreading;the third chapter of the financial text focuses on the analysis of vocabulary,expression,chart and syntax;the fourth chapter of the case analysis proposes translation strategies from two perspectives of vocabulary and sentence.In terms of vocabulary,this report uses the literal translation method according to the characteristics of professional terms,and gives accurate and standardized translation terms.In terms of syntax,this report focuses on passive sentences and long sentences,which is the most important and most difficult part of translation practice.The financial literature is objective and accurate for the facts and situations to be described.Therefore,it is a prominent feature of financial English to use a lot of passive sentences.The practice mainly uses the method of active and passive voice conversion.There are also linguistic differences between English and Chinese.English is a “hypotaxis”language,while Chinese is more inclined to “parataxis”.On the basis of rationalizing the logical relationship of the original English text,the practice use the translation methods such as syntactic linearity,reverse translation method and split translation method,which help to form a faithful and fluent translation.The last chapter makes a summary of the whole text,and puts forward some ideas based on my own practice experience.
