This thesis is a case study of the E-C consecutive interpreting of an interview from The Tim Ferriss Show podcast on gymnastics training. This interview was interpreted twice. After the first interpreting, three interpreting challenges were summarized, namely the interpreting of gymnastics-related terminology, the interpreting of dense information and the interpreting of confusing logic. Then under the guidance of schema theory, this report proposed some interpreting tactics to overcome the challenges, which helped the interpreter’s performance in the second interpreting.Following a brief introduction of schema theory and its application in interpreting, this report proposed some coping tactics in terms of language schemata, content schemata and formal schemata. To be specific, the tactics of constructing language schemata and association were proposed to overcome the challenges about gymnastics-related terminology;the tactics of constructing content schemata along with anticipation and explanation were proposed to overcome the challenges brought about by dense information;the tactics of addition and information reorganization were proposed to clarify the confusing logic.Given that an increasing number of international sports events are hosted by China, interpreting tasks in this field show great promise with a huge market potential. It is hoped that the interpreting tactics proposed in this thesis will help interpreters improve their performance in gymnastics-themed interpreting. |
