This thesis is a Chinese-English translation practice report,and the translation material is selected from the book,The Distant Great Kingdom:A Research on the China’s Image in the West,written by Professor Zhou Ning.The book studies the China’s image in the West in the sense of general social imagination.In the history of the China’s image over seven centuries,the climax of the Enlightenment Movement is taken as the dividing point.Three types of China’s image with Utopian characteristic and three types of China’s image with systematic ideology are constructed.The translator selects chapter six and seven in volume two as translation material.Chapter six mainly describes the emergence of "Chinese Sentiment" and its significance in the structure of western modernity.Chapter seven mainly tells about the tradition,type and transformation of the Utopian image of China,including Confucian Utopia,Chinese sentiment and the red holy land.This book is a professional academic work,and it belongs to the informative text.By analyzing the linguistic style and stylistic features of the text,the translator mainly adopts Peter Newmark’s communicative translation approach to guide the translation practice.This report first summarizes the problems and difficulties that the translator encountered in the process of translation,including analysis of terms,translation of quotations,conversion of complex sentence structures and accurate understanding of words with cultural connotations.Secondly,the translator analyzes the above difficulties and summarizes the related translation methods and skills,including free translation,back translation,addition,restructuring of sentence and so on.The translation report is composed of five parts.Chapter One is the overview of translation practice,which briefly introduces the background and source,objectives and significance,features and structure of the translation practice.Chapter Two is the description of the translation process,which includes the preparation before translation,while-translating process and post-translation work.Chapter Three is the introduction of the translation theory used in the translation practice,which introduces communicative translation approach.Chapter Four is case analysis of the translation practice.It demonstrates the problems and difficulties in the translation practice,and also lists some examples that adopt some translation skills under the guidance of communicative translation strategy.Chapter Five is the conclusion part.The translator summarizes the whole translation process,unsolved translation difficulties of this translation practice and suggestions for future researchers.Through this translation practice,the translator has gained a lot.Firstly,before starting a translation task,the translator needs to consult a large amount of background knowledge and read parallel text,which is conducive to the translator’s understanding of the original text.Secondly,translation theory has important guiding significance for translation practice,and translators need to choose appropriate translation theory.Finally,translators should constantly improve the language competence in both Chinese and English,increase her knowledge reserves and keep on doing translation training.
