| The Development of Modern China’s Economy: A Research on the Dissertations of Foreign Students is an important research achievement made by Professor Zou Jinwen in the field of economic thought history. And it could reflect the latest research trends in this field. To render this economics monograph into English is greatly significant for the dissemination of the research results in China’s economic thought history as well as the promotion of academic exchanges between China and the other countries. This report is based on the Chinese-to-English translation practice of the excerpt from Chapter Nine.Under the guidance of Peter Newmark’s Text Type and Communicative Translation, the translator first analyzes the text type of the source text and then decides on the general translation strategies.According to Newmark’s text type theory, the source text is categorized as informative text, whose purpose is to promote the academic exchange of Chinese modern economic thought.Accordingly, the translator mainly adopts the communicative translation method to guide the translation practice. In the process of translation, the major problems encountered by the translator include the translation of proper nouns,Chinese culture-loaded words, repeated information, classical Chinese expressions as well as long and complicated sentences.Under the guidance of Newmark’s Text Type and Communicative Translation, the translator uses domestication as the main translation strategy while foreignization as the complementary one.As for proper nouns, the translator examines whether the translated terms are acceptable for the target readers;as for culture-loaded terms, the translator uses such translation skills as paraphrase, transliteration plus paraphrase and transliteration plus annotation,so as to realize the adequacy and effectiveness of translation;as for classical Chinese expressions, the translator adds a subject or adjusts the sentence order;as for long and complicated sentences, the translator rearranges the sentence by splitting a sentence into several parts, adding cohesive devices or combining repeated information. The translator pays more attention to the readability of translation as well as the realization of communication effect, while pursuing the accurate and complete expression of the source text. This report presents a series of empirical examples which demonstrate the guiding significance of Newmark’s theory for the translation of economics monograph. And it’s hoped that this report could bring some enlightenment to the translation of academic monographs. |
