| Water is the natural resource on which humans depend. With the acceleration of industrialization and urbanization, the available freshwater resources in China are gradually decreasing, and the issue of water pollution is becoming increasingly serious, which is extremely harmful to human health. In recent years, the Chinese government has taken a series of measures to solve some urban and rural drinking water safety issues, but the overall situation of drinking water is not optimistic. Therefore, how to deal with water pollution and guarantee drinking water safety are still the priorities of the Chinese government.Water Systems is excerpted from the thirteenth chapter of Best Practice for Environmental Health: Environmental Pollution,Protection,Quality and Sustainability. This chapter introduces the situation of water resources, analyzes the water pollution issue that may occur in private drinking water systems(water wells),public drinking water supplies, public drinking water plants and public water distribution systems, and gives recommendations for prevention of drinking water pollution.Due to its practicality, the original text can provide reference for water pollution issue in China to some extent. The original text is scientific and technical text, characterized with many terms and vocabularies, complex attributive clauses and logical relationships.Under the guidance of Newmark’s communicative translation theory, the authors adopts literal translation to deal with scientific and technical terms, and compensation method for the unit symbols, which ensure the accuracy of vocabulary translation in scientific and technical texts. While translating the attributive clauses in the original text, the author uses the methods of preposition, the fusion and division to convert them into fluent Chinese expressions. As for the complexity of logical relationships in the original text, the author applies the methods of maintaining explicit logical and clarifying implicit logic for better logic relationship and readability in the translated text. The translation practice can provide practical guidance for scholars, students and practitioners who engaged in public health, and provide reference for solving the issueof drinking water safety for urban and rural residents in China. In addition,it can help people to realize the relationship between water pollution and health, and to improve their awareness of drinking water safety and environmental protection. |
