On 28th December,2014,an IAA Airbus A320 crashed during the flight from Surabaya,Indonesia to Singapore,causing a catastrophe with great losses.For the purpose of eliminating hidden danger and ensuring aviation safety,Sichuan Airlines expects to learn internal and external contributors by translating the accident investigation report.The ST,Accident Investigation to IAA Airbus A320-216,is issued by KNKT.Appointed by the translation company,the author has translated the information introduction part with around 16000 words.The ST,is a sci-tech text characterized by concise text,explicit logic,accurate diction and high speciality.According to ST features and translation requirements,Catford's translation shift theory has been chosen in guiding translation,holding that“translation shift”is“departures from formal correspondence in the process of going from the SL to the TL”,including level shift and category shift.Class shift,structure shift,unit shift and intra-system shift belong to category shift.Based on the analysis of the ST,the author has solved difficulties in the translation of technical abbreviations,semi-technical words,nominalization phenomenon,passive voice and prepositional phrases by adopting the shift theory and translation techniques.In this report,the author introduces project background information,describes translation preparation,points out difficulties,demonstrates methods,summarizes and proposes suggestions.From this practice,the author has acquired competence in using a theory to solve problems and realized the importance of timely communication,glossary building and translation tools use as well as translators'bilingual competence and broad knowledge domain for creating a high-quality TT.
