A Translation Practice Report On Government Work Report Of Nanning In 2018

Nanning,the capital city of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region,rated as China's international gateway to the 10 ASEAN countries,is the permanent venue for China-ASEAN EXPO as well as China-ASEAN Business and Investment Summit,thus,its strategic position becomes increasingly significant.Correspondingly,the foreign affairs in Nanning have constantly been extended dramatically.One of the ways for international sister cities or partners to comprehend Nanning is through its Government Work Report(herein after referred to as GWR).During the internship in Nanning Foreign Affairs and Overseas Chinese Affairs Office,one of the translation practice tasks given to the author is the English translation of the Nanning Municipal Government work report.Generally speaking,GWR can be divided into two types,namely,the central government work report,and the local government work report.As China' s international status continues to be improved,the English translation of GWR is catching the eyes of more people.Having reviewed numerous papers and materials,the author finds that there are multitudinous studies on the English translation of GWR,however,most of which are on central government work report rather than local ones,especially for Nanning,a city brimming with local characteristics.Therefore,the author boldly selects materials of local government work report for translation,hoping to provide some guidance and reference,on the basis of previous studies,to scholars who conduct studies on this domain later.This paper is written in the form of translation practice report to investigate the English version of 2018 Nanning Municipal GWR.Since the readers of the translated texts of the GWR are mostly foreigners,their language characteristics,ways of thinking,and cultural orientation are distinct from those of Chinese,hence,the author faced tremendous challenges amid the whole translating process.Under the guidance of Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory,this thesis,based on 2018 Nanning Municipal GWR,tentatively provides relative translation strategies to some translation problems encountered.For instance,the translation strategy of addition is employed to deal with multiple non-subject sentences;the annotation is adopted to cope with diversiform abbreviations while the omission or compression is applied in the translation of various category words.Generally,the author,instead of translating literally,pays more attention to the expression of the information itself and maximizes the meanings or connotations of the original text to give full play to its role of external propaganda,considering the acceptability of the translation as well as the reader's intelligibility.
