A Study Of C-E Translation Of The Report For The 19^th National Congress Of The Communist Party Of China Under Skopos Theory

On behalf of the 18th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China,President Xi Jinping delivered the report to the 19th National Congress on October 18,2017.How to keep the translation,however,faithful to meaning,comprehensible in style and elegant in language has been the demanding task.Since the political report represents the future of China,whose translation is affected by more diverse factors than social conditions,cultural background and ways of thinking,an error in translation would be considered to have potential political consequences if the source text is altered or potentially altered in the meaning.The objective of this research is on the political report translation.Although the political discourse and translation are by no means new areas of study,it is the first time that China has invited foreign experts to participate directly in the translation.Compared with other political text translations of the same era,this translation is more valuable in discussion.Under Hans J.Vermeer theory,this study aims to solve the following problems:First,in the translation of political texts,how is an understanding and acceptance of the target readers to be achieved flexibly?Second,what translation strategies are to be employed in order to meet the three requirements of faithfulness,comprehensibility and elegance?Here understanding fidelity as an ethical principle in professional translation,Skopos theory is proposed as guidelines.In order to achieve this goal,the author adopts a comparative analysis method to analyze the Chinese and English vocabulary and syntax of the 19th National Congress Report,focusing on the guiding role of the three principles advocated by Skopos Theory in the English translation of the report.In the course of this research,the author has the following findings:Firstly,the language using of political text translation must conform to the using standard of target language.Secondly,under the principle of translation that follows the "Faithfulness" and strives for "Expressiveness and Elegance”,the translator should flexibly adopt translation methods,including free translation,omission and supplement in the translation process in order to let the target readers fully understand the political reportThrough this study,the author tries to put forward some feasible guidance to the translation of political texts,and hopes that it can be helpful to the translation of political texts in the future.
