A Study On The Translation Of Report At The 19th CPC National Congress Under Poly-system Theory

China is playing an increasingly important role in the world with the rise of its international status.Apart from seeking welfare for its people,the policies and various guidelines of China,to some extent,provide a reference for other countries in the world in dealing with their domestic and international affairs.Therefore,against the backdrop of this,China's political documents are rushing into the forefront of news and social media platforms in the world.The Report at the 19 th CPC National Congress delivered by president Xi Jinping is of paramount significance since it not only gives a summary about great achievements of China in the past five years,but also puts forward future policies and goals in fields such as politics,economy,culture,ecology and diplomacy.Thus,the epoch-making report deserves our analysis and study and so does its translation.Based on this,the thesis studies the English version of the report,aiming to provide guidance for the translation of political documents in the future.The poly-system theory,once appearing,injects fresh blood for translation studies,turning people's eyes onto other factors outside of the text.Professor Xie Tianzhen from Shanghai International Studies University said in his article that the theory is effective in the translation,leads translation studies onto the road of cultural studies and opens up a fairly broad research field for translation studies.The theory holds that translation studies are not just limited to the quality of the translated text.Instead,it focuses on other different factors influencing translation,therefore combining translation with many factors including cultural contexts,social conditions and politics.Once appearing,the poly-system theory is closely linked to literature translation and most domestic scholars also did a large number of studies on literature translation such as novels by using the theory.Therefore,the thesis studies whether the poly-system theory can be applied in non-literary translation with the focus on the translation ofthe Report at the 19 th CPC National Congress.With the poly-system theory as the theoretical frame,the thesis includes the following three system factors in the analysis of the English version of the report.The three factors are: thinking differences between China and the west,reader's acceptance and the patronage.After analysis of examples,the thesis holds that:(1)Language,culture,geography,philosophy and other factors cause the huge differences in thinking modes between China and other western countries.The English version of the report has achieved gravity-defying success because it has given full consideration to the impact of the thinking differences during the process of translation.(2)The English version of the report,starting from the reader's acceptance,focuses on the reader's acceptance and understanding,and strives to make the content of the report more easily accepted by western readers.(3)As the patronage and initiator of the report,the central government highly values the writing and the translation of the report.Moreover,the patronage would also affect the translation.After study,the theory finds that the three poly-systems would have a bearing on the translation of the report and the application of poly-system theory in non-literary translation is feasible.At the same time,the thesis analyses the translation of the report by using three translating techniques,hoping to solve tough translation problems encountered by translators in the practice of translation.And the three translating techniques are: “incompatibility of specificity and generalization” “integration of similar meanings” as well as “the diversity of expressions”.
