This paper is a case study of the Seal of Collection of Geng Zhaozhong,a painting and calligraphy collector of the early Qing Dynasty. In the late Ming and early Qing dynasties,a large number of painting and calligraphy collections in the Ming dynasty were scattered, which promoted the rise of private painting and calligraphy. The seal of Collection can be stamp on paintings, calligraphy and books for appreciation, approval and collection. With the popularity of collecting, the seal of Collection has developed diverse functions and types, and the private collectors have countless seals. At present, there are no recordings and literatures about Geng Zhaozhong and his collections of paintings and calligraphy at home and abroad. All previous scholars have not systematically studied his Seals of Collection.Based on the existing recordings and related materials of Geng Zhaozhong’s paintings and calligraphy, this paper sorts out the standard seals of collection of Geng Zhaozhong, and verifies the rules and habits of sealing through the comparative analysis,so as to serve the authentication and dating of related paintings and calligraphy collections, and provide an important supporting basis for the study of Geng Zhaozhong ’s paintings and calligraphy collection in the future. At the same time, this paper takes two standard seals of collection Of Geng,“Zhenshang”and Dancheng”,as a case analysis.Geng’s art of seal cutting and of sealing compositions embody a sense of elegance and clearness, opening a new fashion of seal cutting that emphasizes the integration of characters and images. Thus,he becomes an important founder of the development of pictorial seals, and provides a research foundation that emphasizes both theory and practice for the author’s artistic creation.
