The Collection of Ancient Seals is a description of ancient seals edited by Mr.Luo Fuyi.It contains 5708 ancient seals, which are divided into official seals, private name seals, private compound surname seals and single character seals, making it the largest collection of ancient seals published so far.It contains more than 3800 names, which is an important material for studying the surnames, names, and characters of the Warring States period.Taking the name seal in The Collection of Ancient Seals as the research object, this paper discusses the names seen in The Collection of Ancient Seals from multiple angles through word meaning discussion, shape analysis and diachronic comparison. The paper includes six parts:The first part is the introduction. This part makes it clear that the research object of the paper is the names seen in The Collection of Ancient Seals and discusses the current situation of the study of the ancient seal and the names of people in the pre Qin and Han Dynasties. The research results of The Collection of Ancient Seals are very rich, which is the basis of this paper. However, the research on the names of unearthed documents is mixed with the textual research and interpretation of various unearthed materials. The research on the names of ancient seals mainly focuses on the textual research and interpretation, and there is a lack of thematic research. The second part explores the rationale for the taking of personal names. In this part,by exhaustively extracting the images and interpretations of names in The Collection of Ancient Seals and referring to the research results of names in ancient seals,a total of 1671 cases and597 names without objection are selected. From the perspective of meaning-derived reason, they are divided into six categories with sub categories and counted number and frequency:nature related including mountains and rivers, animals, plants, time and space;people related including body, identity, emotion and behavior, activities related including production, commerce, politics, military and sacrifice, necessities of life related including clothing, catering, architecture, transportation, utensils, auspicious blessing related including auspicious health, wealth, achievement and morality and negative notoriety related including disease, bad character. The third part discusses the 49 double names.According to the part of speech and word meaning, double names are divided into noun, verb, adjective and phrase structure. This part examines the word formation of double names, mainly including compound and additional forms. The compound form includes joint-compound form,modifier-head form,verb-object form and subject-predicate form.In addition, eight double names are monosyllabic words or combinations to express specific meanings, such as the ancient place names Handan and Wulu, which are not classified. The fourth part discusses the commonness and individuality of the names.According to the proportion of the frequency of each category, the name of The Collection of Ancient Seals is analyzed. The commonness is the pursuit of auspicious and healthy, reflect natural things. The naming characteristics of each system are as follows: The Qi system has more names after political activities; The Chu system has more names related to heavenly stems and earthly branches; The names of Yan system are more related to human beings;Qin people’s names fit their cultural characteristics of utilitarianism, emphasis on achievement and pursuit of moral quality; The three Jin system have the largest number of names and the most abundant types, showing the characteristics of emphasizing health, merit and morality and neglecting wealth accumulation. The fifth part discusses the regional differences of the 12 person names in figure. The differences of figure of names’ characters are manifested in the increase of parts, decorative dots or horizontal strokes, the trend differences of strokes. For example, the difference of "金" lies in the upper shape and the direction of four points: In the Qin system,it is diamond and four points retract; In the Chu system it is triangular and four points outward; In the three Jin Dynasties,it is triangular, slightly skimmed at four points, and the border is used as a horizontal stroke. The character "得(de)" has distinct characteristics in each system: in the Jin and Qi system it is written as "(?)(de)" and in the Jin system it uses “又(you)” as a radical and in the Qi system it uses “寸(cun)”;in Yan system it is written as "得" in a special way;The Qin system write it as "(?)(de)" and “寸(cun)” is used as a radical which the shape of “贝(bei)” is complete. Each series of "Qiu" has the phenomenon of increasing parts or using decorations: the Qi and Qin systems have shorter horizontal lines in the middle;Jin system increased "丌(qi)";"土(tu)" was added in the lower part of Chu system. The "日(ri)" has various deformations, but the regional characteristics are not obvious. There are two writing methods of making a circle(adding points in the circle)and an inverted triangle; The Yan system has a slightly square outline with points added; The Chu system has three writing methods: inverted triangle,"口(kou)" shape, horizontal to oblique stroke; The Qin system increased horizontal in the interior; The Jin system writes between a circle and an inverted triangle. The sixth part discusses five controversial names This paper holds that the four interpretations of""in academic circles are not desirable;""is a phenomenon of increasing"土(tu)"and can be directly interpreted as"防(fang)";""should be interpreted as"青(qing)";""should be attached to"(huan)"and interpreted as"宦(huan)";The 3130,3131 and 3132 should be interpreted as"兢训(jingxun)".
