A Practical Report Of E-C Translation Of Satellite Communications News

This thesis is a practical report on English-Chinese translation,and the source text of which is satellite communications news.The author is the secretary to chairman of a satellite communications service provider called Sichuan Star Time Network Communications Co.,Ltd.,whose daily responsibilities include interpreting and translation.Normally,the translation work is mainly focusing on material translation and bilingual minutes of meeting.Both of the interpretation and translation work involved were related to satellite communications.Through long-term practice,the author found that satellite communications translation is still in the early stage of development in mainland China.As a result,people engaged in satellite communications industry always have a similar dilemma that there were few available reference materials for them to turn to.Therefore,this subject is selected as the theme of the author's graduation practice,in hope of making a bit contribution to the development of domestic satellite communications text translation.As a category of scientific and technological texts,satellite communications text certainly owns its specific language characteristics and translation requirements.With the international development of satellite communications,new technologies and new words emerge in an endlessly stream.Compound words,derivation and acronyms are common terminology occurred in the practice of satellite communications translation.The author applies a guiding theory to the practice of scien-tech text translation,in order to improve the efficiency and quality of translation in the work.The guiding theory of this report is Skopos theory.Skopos theory advocates that the translator shall adopt corresponding strategies according to the background and demand of target audience,so as to help to accomplish the translation task better.This report is a review and summary of the translation process of public news materials from official websites of Viasat and iDirect.In the process of translation practice,the author adopted the strategy of literal translation to ensure the technical accuracy and information transmission of the source text,also used the techniques of increasing and decreasing words,as well as long sentences splitting to make the target text more native in Chinese and reader-friendly.The whole practical report is divided into five chapters.The first part introduced the background and requirements.Then briefed the task target and analysis,stated the preparations and procedures of the translation work.The fourth chapter presented case studies under Skopos theory.In addition,the translator summarized this practice,expecting to provide reference value for domestic satellite communications translation.
