A Report On The E-C Translation Of Elizabeth Jolley's Novel The Sugar Mother (Excerpts P173-193)

The text selected for this translation is the novel The Sugar Mother written by Australian female writer Elizabeth Jolley,and provided by the Australian Research Center of Mudanjiang Normal University.The novel is about the story of Professor Edwin Page and surrogate mother Leila.The translator chooses the ending part of the novel which describes Edwin's psychological activities and behaviors when he learns that his wife is coming back early.This part is mainly the description of characters' dialogues and psychological activities.Therefore,translation difficulties are reflected in characters' psychological descriptions,reproduction of language styles and transmission of cultural information.Under the guidance of Reception Theory,the translator chooses a variety of translation strategies from the perspective of readers' Horizon of Expectation to cater readers' language aesthetic appreciation,reading habits and cultural cognition,so the aesthetic gap between target language readers and translation will be narrowed,and target language readers will get equal opportunity to enjoy reading as the source language readers.The translation strategies used include: choosing Chinese four-character idioms,rhyming words,modal particles,annotation,addition,parallel sentences and other rhetorical devices.The translator hopes to sum up translation skills and strategies suitable for literary translation through this practice and provide reference for Australian literary research and Elizabeth Jolley's researchers.
