Tiffany and the Detective Dog,written by Will Perks from New Zealand, describes a detective story in a primary school, whose main characters are an 11-year-old girl,Tiffany and a retired police dog,Rasputin. It boasts vivid characters, simple vocabularies, concise expressions and attractive plots. This novel, whose target readers are children aged 10-12,is an excellent children’s novel, worth being recommended to Chinese children. Thus,it is chosen as the source text of the translation practice in this report.Besides, nowadays the reader,as a necessary part in the realization of the significance of a work,is considered as the key to translation study except for the author, the text and the translator. Therefore, the Reception Aesthetics can apply to the translation study. The founder of Reception Aesthetics,Hans Robert Jauss, came up with a concept, called “Horizon of Expectation”,which means a fixed physiological structure to a work based on the receiver’s experience on life and aesthetics. This concept applying to the translation study focuses on the acceptance of the reader to a translation work. This report is based on the translation practice of children’s novel Tiffany and the Detective Dog with parallel texts as the reference materials. From the perspective of Jauss’ s Horizon of Expectation,it analyzes the target readers’ horizon of expectations of the translation text, takes some specific translation examples to discuss how to satisfy the readers’ expectations in the translation from three aspects, including the vocabulary usage, the thinking pattern and the cultural background, and concludes specific translation methods which can satisfy these expectations.
