Since its inception, the Frankfurt School has had a unique mission, namely, isto reexamine Marx's philosophy and to build up a "critical social theory" of contemporary industrial society. As a representative personage of the Frankfurt School,Schmidt critically examined Marx's concept of nature from the relationship between nature and human beings.Schmidt redefines the premise of the concept of nature, proposes the idea that nature and society are intermediate of each other, and criticizes Marx's concept of nature from both theoretical and realistic perspectives, and proposes that Marx's conception about the reconciliation of man and nature in the future society is a utopia. But Schmidt's natural theory must be treated with caution.Because on the one hand,Schmidt further demonstrates the differences between the realistic nature of Marx and the isolated nature of the past through the analysis of the relationship between nature and society, and innovatively proposes a two-way intermediary theory of nature and society, which helps us to understand Marx's concept of nature and gives Marx's dialectic, epistemology and materialism new connotations. However,on the other hand,Schmidt's understanding of the concept of nature is obviously different from Marx's understanding of the concept of nature. In particular,Schmidt is inconsistent with Marx while using the concepts of political economy(such as use-value and transformation of the material),which led to Marx's conception about the reconciliation of nature and human understood as a utopia by Schmidt.Based on the above, this thesis mainly takes the core of Schmidt's concept of nature — "the relationship between human and nature" as the starting point, based on the text to analyze Schmidt's concept of nature. This thesis briefly discusses how the relationship between human and nature became the core of Schmidt's concept of nature and his source of theory. This thesis focuses on Schmidt's construction of hiswhole philosophical system through the concept of nature to clarify the similarities and differences between Schmidt's philosophical system and Marx's natural theory.
