| The thesis makes a comparative analysis on the translation of culture-loaded words in Gladys Yang’s and Kinkley’s versions of Biancheng from the perspective of translator behavior criticism, with the help of the "Truth-seeking-utility-attaining" Evaluative Model of Continuum towards Translator Behavior. The author adopts qualitative approach in comparing and analyzing the two versions and selects culture-loaded words in the source text and their translation in the target text as research objects. It is found that differences in translators’ personal backgrounds and translation purposes can lead to different translation strategies, language styles and degrees of "truth-seeking-utility-attaining".Gladys Yang generally adopts domestication in translating cultural information of the novel, using free translation, omissions and other methods to convey the source text’s meaning. Her translation mainly serves reader/society,aims at attaining utility and is inclined to the right at the "Truth-seeking-utility-attaining" Evaluative Model of Continuum.Gladys Yang mainly demonstrates her identity as a social being. On the contrary,Kinkley generally adopts foreignization in his translation, using literal translation and adding endnotes. His translation mainly serves writer/original,aims at seeking truth and is inclined to the left at the "Truth-seeking-utility-attaining" Evaluative Model of Continuum.Kinkley mainly demonstrates his identity as a linguistic being. |
